Walkers Ready Salted Crisps
A refreshingly short ingredient list with no artificial additives, but still a calorie-dense, fried, salty snack that is best kept as an occasional treat.
Ingredients (3)
Potatoes
Potatoes are a whole-food ingredient that provides some potassium, vitamin C and fibre. Frying at high temperatures forms acrylamide, a process contaminant that is monitored by food safety authorities, but the potato itself is not a concern.
Sunflower Oil
Sunflower oil is relatively low in saturated fat and has no additives, which is better than many palm-oil-based snacks. It is still very calorie-dense, and a large share of a crisp's calories come from this oil. High-temperature frying can also create oxidation products.
Salt
A single bag is a modest salt source, but crisps are easy to eat in large quantities and salt adds up quickly alongside the rest of the diet. High habitual salt intake is linked to raised blood pressure.
Healthier alternatives
Whole grain with more fibre and far fewer calories per serving than fried crisps.
