What it is
BHT prevents oils and fats in packaged foods from oxidising and turning rancid.
Health concern
Evidence is mixed — some animal studies show tumour effects, others show none. Regulators permit it at low levels.
The verdict
Lower concern than BHA but still a synthetic additive worth minimising.
